Part One

NORMAL HEALTH STATUS

At Blu Sky Care, we take seriously the health of all of our stakeholders and clients, so it’s important that all staff are skilled and competent.

The most important thing to consider is to be alert and aware of what constitutes a normal healthy functioning body system in a person and how you are required to support and maintain this in the context of your job.

Let’s define what constitutes NORMAL (or the NORM) in a generally mainstream person of average health.

Consider what it means to have:

  • Normal breathing
  • Normal skin condition
  • Normal scalp and hair
  • Normal condition of the eyes, mouth ears, nose
  • Normal appearance of the neck and throat
  • Normal condition of the chest, shoulders
  • Normal condition of the arms and hands
  • Normal condition of the abdomen
  • Normal condition of the genital and anus area
  • Normal bowel movements
  • Normal passing of urine
  • Normal condition of the urine and faeces
  • Normal condition of the legs, hips, knees and feet

You’ll need to consider the client’s ‘’normal’’ signs who you are working with who may have some variables — but remember that this may be their usual condition. What is ‘normal’ for one person might not be normal for another person. For example, someone may suffer from chronic joint pain due to an old injury which may worsen over time. Some autoimmune disorders also cause chronic pain in the sufferer. A certain level of pain is, therefore, ‘’normal’’ for these individuals to experience. You will need to be alert to changes to this!

You will then need to continue to observe for any further deviations from the norm of that individual and report it to the supervisor before it becomes a matter of serious concern. This is a fundamental aspect of your role/profession and it should be undertaken on a regular basis for all of the clients you support.
